Becoming a veterinarian is a long hard educational road. Plans must be made as early as high school to become prepared to even apply to a veterinary college. In high school, students should elect to take as many math and science courses as possible. Part time jobs involving animals and animal care must be secured during high school and college. High school counselors can help with course selection and decisions concerning college. High school counselors are there for the students, use them!

Once accepted to college, an appropriate major must be chosen to prepare the student for veterinary school. Undergraduate college generally takes four years and consists of a variety of courses. English, government, math and physical education, among many others, will be completed during the first year or so. Each year will include more specialized courses relating to your major. Very good grades are required to be accepted into veterinary school. A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 to 4.0(mostly A's with a few B's) will not guarantee acceptance into veterinary school. Experience with animals is also very important to obtain while in college. If possible, seek a position with a veterinary hospital.

Once accepted into veterinary school, get ready for four grueling years of extremely heavy course loads, extremely difficult material and extremely long hours. Acceptance into any veterinary school is a very difficult undertaking, but there are some words of wisdom. Make excellent grades. Take heavy class loads. Work hard for a veterinarian during high school and college. Excel in all math and science courses. Veterinary medicine is an ever-changing, very exciting career with never a dull moment. If you decide on a veterinary career, take dead aim and just do it!
